At the end of May, the Federal Government announced its Expert Panel to review the governance, efficiency, structure and operation of Australia’s superannuation system. Also known as the Cooper Review, the Expert Panel will report to the Government by 30 June, 2010. Sandy Grant, a Superpartners Board Director, was named as one of the Panel members. Sandy also serves on the Boards of Members Equity Bank, CareSuper and ACTU Member Connect.

There will be some very sober figures to digest in the coming months as millions of super fund members across Australia receive their annual member statements. The continuing downturn in investment markets both here and overseas means just about every super fund in the country has recorded a second (financial) year of negative returns.

Many Australians are still in the dark when it comes to super, despite the accessibility of financial advice. According to a recent survey by Suncorp Wealth Management, almost half of those surveyed believe super is too complicated and two in five revealed that they didn’t feel that their super was in fact their own money.
